American Association Insider: Friday June 12 takeaways

Hot take here. With all the scoring in the league thus far in 2026, I think we are seeing the remnants of what happens when any pitcher that shows potential is getting snapped up by a Mexican League team or an MLB organization. What's left is not a good look for the league with games resembling softball scores. In six games tonight, a total of 99 runs were scored. I doubt that's a record that is kept track of, but if it was, I'd guess tonight would be the record.  As an FYI, I will not have anything for tomorrow's games as I will be away celebrating my wedding anniversary.  Gary SouthShore 10 Kane County 3 I don't know what it is, but no matter how the RailCats are playing, they seem to have the number of the Cougars. Tonight was no exception as seven runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings was the difference in a RailCats road victory. Peyton Long who pitched seven innings for the third time in fourth starts, picked up his fourth straight victory.  Lincoln 9 ...

Sorry I didn't have anything for you last night. I was covering the local amateur team who had a 8pm first pitch, 40 minutes from home. By the time I traveled the country side highways and got home, it was 11:30 and I had a 7 am wake up staring me down.  Kansas City 25 Fargo-Moorhead 9 I guess if you're going to give up 25 runs, do it when you're hosting a businessman's special and a good chunk of the crowd is just happy to escape work and the final score is inconsequential. After a late night where it was a RedHawks slugfest win, the Monarchs struck back, breaking a league record for home runs in a game with eight. Grant Richardson was a Griffin Doersching away from line of the week going 4-5 with three home runs and seven runs driven in. I think I've mentioned several times already that this is going to be a dangerous Monarchs team if they get some hitting, they showed their potential today.  Photo courtesy of Jennifer Andreachi Kane County 8 Lake Country 2 All g...

American Association Insider: Tuesday June 9th Takeaways

Folks, I have to admit, once the big game in Geneva got to be a bit one sided, I flipped over to the Stanley Cup Final, so I didn't catch a lot of the late action. The Cup will be one at some point soon and you'll have your halfway competent blogger back.  Lake Country 6 Kane County 3 With the roll the DockHounds are on, it's going to take a perfect game to end their winning streak. The Cougars left the bases loaded in the first and seventh with chances to jump to a lead and get back in the game. The DockHounds were able to get to Konor Ash even though he pitched better than the boxscore will say. Ryan Hernandez hit his 10th home run to take over the league lead. The DockHounds can tie Penascola's 15 game winning streak with a win on Wednesday. Milwaukee 13 Gary SouthShore 1 So who had Griffin Doersching breaking the league record for most RBI's in a game with 10 by hitting three home runs at US Steelyard on their bingo card for tonight. Can we just give him Hitter...

Just rolled into my driveway after taking in the DockHounds vs. Dogs and making a few pit stops on the way home, including one for a quick cat nap at a rest stop.  It felt nice to g...

American Association SUNDAY Insider: Bananas aren't meant for everyone

This is a topic and an idea for an Insider that has been "in the can" for quite a while. I know that this will make me look like the old man yelling at the cloud. I'm 56, so be it, I really am an old man. I am not a fan of Banana Ball.  This is going to be all over the place. So forgive me for a choppy Insider. In 1989 or so, ESPN got Major League Baseball. In doing so, they began a series called Sunday Night Baseball. I remember it was a huge deal if your team got to play the Sunday night game, a solo standing game (once the Rangers moved indoors and quit playing Sunday night home games) that had a national audience. One last big game for the weekend. The deal with ESPN expired after last year and was not renewed. Now, the kids do not get to see a big major league matchup on Sunday night. Instead, ESPN is showing a Banana Ball game. Could you imagine a Lakers vs. Celtics matchup in the 80's not being shown in favor of the Harlem Globetrotters?  Granted, this is not ...

After checking into my suburban Milwaukee hotel, I was mesmorized by the Stanley Cup Final game. I'm starting this after the first overtime. Lincoln 11 Sioux Falls 10 (10 innings from Fri...

American Association Insider: Friday June 5

Milwaukee 4 Fargo-Moorhead 3 The road woes continue for the RedHawks as they have dropped all four on their current road trip. Down 4-0 the RedHawks crept back in the game but just fell a run short. Juan Diaz posted the win for the Milkmen allowing just one run in six innings of work. The Milkmen economized their hits as they only had three, getting outhit by the RedHawks 6-3. Lake Country 5 Chicago 4 It's now 11 wins in a row for the DockHounds but the Dogs made them earn it tonight. The Dogs jumped out to a 3-0 lead. Trailing in the ninth, the Dogs scored a run and had the bases loaded with two outs but could not push across the tying run. Peter Zimmerman and Joshua Mears both had solo home runs for the DockHounds. Tyreque Reed had his second consecutive three hit game for the Dogs.  Gary SouthShore 11 Kansas City 3 Maybe the RailCats truly are for real. They went to Legends Field and did something few have done this season, win a game at Legends Field going away. Korry Ho...

American Association Insider: Thursday June 4 Takeaways

Kevin Luckow (Not a member of IBWAA) Full disclosure here, I didn't see much baseball tonight. I finally cut bait on two bags full of old clothes while watching the Stanley Cup. It barely made a dent in the closet. But here's a useless fact, I have t-shirts from every American Association All Star Game I've attended. Onto the takeaways powered by our good friends at iScore. Lake Country 12 Lincoln 3 Make it 10 in a row for the DockHounds. It took a while to get the bats going as they trailed 3-0 heading into the fifth, but 12 runs in the last five innings to win going away in Lincoln. Every starter for the DockHounds had at least two hits with the second through sixth batters having three hits apiece. Ryan Hernandez kept pace with Jose Sermo with his ninth home run. Joshua Mears (7th) and Peter Zimmerman (6th) also went deep. Did I miss something? I noticed at the end of the DockHounds broadcast that Dominic Stearn was calling Kamp Oconomowoc, DockHounds Ballpark. Did the...

American Association Insider: Wednesday June 3rd Takeaways

Plenty of day games dotted a six game slate in the American Association on Wednesday afternoon. For those new to the league, you may wonder why they play a day game in the middle of the series opposed to having a "getaway day" game on Thursday. I have heard the players like it as it gives them an extra night off during the week. Even if it means getting up early to play a day game.  Kansas City 3 Fargo-Moorhead 2 After a 1-0 game to begin the series on Tuesday night, we thought the bats came alive after both teams scored a pair of runs in the first inning. From there once again pitching took over as there would be no scoring until the eighth inning. An RBI single by Brady Lindsly drove in what proved to be the winning run. Call me old fashioned but I love seeing pitching reining supreme. The offenses in this league have had their way for so many years as any effective pitcher would get snatched up by Mexico or MiLB. Lake Country 10 Lincoln 9 The same could not be said in Lin...

I didn't catch many of the finishes tonight. The Carolina vs. Vegas Stanley Cup game was one for the ages. If both teams bring it like they did tonight, it's going to be a fabulous series. Cleburne 3 Kan...
