American Association Insider: Tuesday June 30 Takeaways

The last day of June, the heat is on, and we got All Star Starters named. One editorial comment. I only went 11 of 18 on my All Star picks. It looks like either there is a factor of the ballpark the DockHounds play in, or voters don't follow the team much. I felt a couple guys were slighted in favor of better known players. The DockHound that I did not pick was Ryan Hernandez, knowing he's playing in Mexico. Why he was still voted as a starter puzzled me. I wasn't going to blog tonight. I was real tired from the paying job, but after the games were done tonight, I started streaming Bull Durham, and it got the juices flowing again.  

Cleburne 5 Lake Country 4

The Railroaders used a four run fifth inning to erase a 4-1 deficit and showed that it wasn't just a road trip thing. This team is on a roll. A Frankie Tostado double plated two runs in the fifth inning rally. Aaron Mishoulam picked up the win for his third consecutive start, settling down after a three run DockHounds first inning, only allowing one run after that going six innings.

Kane County 7 Gary SouthShore 4

Matt Bottcher coming off an All Star snub went 3-4 with two doubles and four runs batted in. Charles Mack homered for his second consecutive game. Westin Muir defeated the RailCats for the second time in a week. Muir went six innings allowing a run on four hits, striking out seven in picking up his sixth win of the season.

Sioux Falls 5 Sioux City 1

Scott Combs broke open a one run game with a two RBI single in the eighth inning to propel the Canaries to a win, breaking a five game losing streak. Anthony Hall had a solo home run in the first inning. Chase Gearing got through five innings on a hot night in Siouxland allowing just a run to pick up the win. 

Fargo-Moorhead 9 Lincoln 6

The RedHawks scored the first seven runs of the game and withstood a Saltdogs comeback to win their second straight game in Lincoln and third in a row overall. Dillon Thomas joined the double digit home run club with a three run shot in the seventh inning. Kyle Crigger won his third consecutive decision allowing three runs in six innings.

Chicago 13 Milwaukee 11

An eight run sixth inning was just what the Dogs needed in breaking their losing streak, defeating Milwaukee in a wild one at Impact Field. It was the second loss of the day for the Milkmen, the other being the loss of Michael Hallquist as his contract was transferred to the Chicago Cubs. Congratulations to Mickey Scheetz and Kelvan Pilot for being the only two pitchers to not get scored on. Giovanni DiGiacomo extended his hitting streak collecting three hits, driving in two. C.J. Cepicky drove in four runs from the nine spot in the order. Four different Milkmen collected home runs. 

Kansas City 12 Winnipeg 0 Game 1

Winnipeg 11 Kansas City 3 Game 2

Two blowouts in doubleheader action in Winnipeg on Tuesday. Ryan Garcia went the distance in Game one for the Monarchs allowing just three hits. J.D. Davis and Austin Callhan each had three hits and a home run in leading the Monarchs 14 hit attack.

T.J. Schofield Sam went 2-2 with four runs driven in, to lead an 11 hit attack to gain a split of the doubleheader. Mitch Lambson got through five innings, allowing three runs to get his third win of the season.

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) What was once a rumor passed between league colleagues, has now been reported by media. The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
