American Association Insider: Thursday June 25th Takeaways

Four of five  games in the American Association on Thursday night with the game in Kansas City between the Monarchs and Sioux Falls Canaries being washed out.

Lake Country 9 Milwaukee 4

Ask anyone in Wisconsin and they will tell you that a six pack usual means the start of a good night. The DockHounds put that to use scoring a six pack of runs in the third inning, knocking out Milkmen starter Christian Young. Jack Blomgren and Peter Zimmerman led the attack with three RBI each. Zimmerman will be counted on a lot now by the DockHounds after the news of the day. Triple Crown threat Ryan Hernandez had his contract transferred to the Mexican League. A rare contract transfer of a position player, and a blow to the DockHounds who have already had their pitching staff poached with contract transfers.

Sioux City 9 Winnipeg 7

In the game I was at tonight, the Explorers struck early for four runs in the first inning only to see the Goldeyes strike back for four in the fourth. The Goldeyes seemed to time Joshua Landry the second time through the order, while the Explorers got figured out by Mitchell Lambson. The Explorers seemed to pull away with a three run seventh and were up 9-4 in the ninth. The Goldeyes didn't go quietly, scoring three in the ninth and had the tying run on first before a lineout double play ended the game. Austin Davis was a menace all night for the Explorers with three hits, three stolen bases and two runs scored. Noah Marcelo collected another three hits for the Goldeyes as he went 6-13 with five runs batted in for the series. Goldeyes pitchers walked 13 Explorers and allowed nine stolen bases. 

Cleburne 10 Chicago 9

Up 8-4 in the seventh inning, the Railroaders couldn't hold the lead as the Dogs scored five times and seemed to be in the driver's seat. But the Railroaders scored twice in the ninth. A Delino DeShields Jr. triple scored a run to tie the game before a sacrifice fly plated DeShields Jr. Ryder Yakel notched his fifth save in a scoreless ninth. Cody Thomas and Frankie Tostado both homered for the Railroaders. Giovanni DiGiacomo collected three hits, but the Dogs had no long balls. That strikes me as the Dogs for the last several years have been known for using the long ball at Impact Field. The Dogs as a team are ninth in the league in home runs with 29. With the loss the Dogs drop to 13-22, 10 games out of first. Unusual territory for Chicago. They travel to Lincoln to face the 14-22 Saltdogs with both teams looking to get some momentum.

Kane County 11 Gary SouthShore 2

The Cougars scored five in the first inning and never looked back as they salvaged one game in their series with the RailCats. Armond Upshaw and Charles Mack both homered and Todd Lott who had been snakebit lately had four hits. The Cougars bullpen, victimized on Wednesday by the RailCats late in the game, had their mojo back, allowing just three hits in 3.2 innings in support of Westin Muir who collected his fifth win in seven starts this season.

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) What was once a rumor passed between league colleagues, has now been reported by media. The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
