American Association Insider: Tuesday June 23rd Takeaways

Two series continued and four more started on Tuesday night. Let's take a look.

Fargo-Moorhead 4 Lincoln 3

After the Saltdogs had a three run eighth to tie the game, it was Jose Sermo providing the dramatics with a home run in the last of the eighth that proved to be the difference as the RedHawks beat the Saltdogs for a second consecutive night. In what is shaping up to be a fun race for the Home Run crown, Sermo's home run was his 13th and puts him one behind Ryan Hernandez for the league lead. Sermo has hits in seven of his last eight games.

Milwaukee 6 Lake Country 4

In a battle of two teams going in the opposite direction, the Milkmen held on to defeat their rivals to the north for the second consecutive night. The Milkmen have now won 10 of 11 and the DockHounds have dropped six in a row. There was no Ryan Hernandez in the DockHounds lineup tonight and it may have cost them the game as his spot in the order would've came up in the ninth inning. Michael Hallquist homered twice and is now up to ten for the season. Jhordany Mezquita got the win for the Milkmen with a quality start going six innings allowing two earned runs. The Milkmen have had excellent starting pitching during their hot streak.

Kansas City 9 Sioux Falls 0

In the three round bout between the top two teams in the West, round one was all Monarchs as eight of the nine starters recorded hits and Jimmy Endersby earned his first win going past five innings for the first time in 2026. Endersby threw seven shutout innings allowing just a pair of hits. Although it didn't help tonight, Sioux Falls got a boost with the return of Josh Rehwaldt to the lineup. 

Sioux City 9 Winnipeg 7

The Explorers can never make it look too easy, can they? After jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the second inning, the Goldeyes got with two runs in the ninth inning before the rally stalled out. It was the 2-4 spots that did the damage for the Explorers with Zac Vooletich, Henry George, and Braulio Vasquez combining to go 7-11 with two home runs and six runs batted in. Noah Marcello had a three run home run and Max Murphy hit a solo home run to help try to get Winnipeg back in the game. Zach Willeman threw seven innings allowing three earned runs and striking out ten to get the win.

Cleburne 4 Chicago 3

Down 3-0, the Railroaders scored four runs and shut out the Dogs from there to pick up a road win. Aaron Mishoulam overcame his defense that had five errors for the night and allowed three unearned runs for the Dogs in six innings. Mishoulam won his team leading fourth game and lowered his ERA to 3.15.  

Gary SouthShore 3 Kane County 1

The Cougars offensive woes continue as Matt Reitz shut down the Cougars allowing no runs in seven innings pitched allowing just five hits. Reitz picked up his fourth win to go with a 2.57 ERA. The Cougars got good work from their bullpen as they allowed just one hit in the last four innings, but the Cougars could only put up one run in the eighth inning. The thing the Cougars have that most teams do not is pitching. But if the offense continues to struggle, we may see a deal where the Cougars are going to have to deal an arm to get an offensive boost.

The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
