American Association Insider: Tuesday June 16 Takeaways

You could give Luke Short pitcher of the week honors after being the first pitcher to hold down the Monarchs offense. Short allowed three runs, two earned in 6.2 innings of work. The Railroaders, down 3-1 in the seventh pushed three runs across to take the lead for good. Frankie Tostado drove in two of them with a double, a part of a three RBI night. 

Lincoln 7 Winnipeg 5

The Goldeyes managed to erase a 5-0 deficit with a five run sixth inning, but could not add any more as the Saltdogs pushed across two late runs, the second a home run off the bat of Jack Dragum. Give the back end of the Saltdogs bullpen credit as they only allowed one hit in the last three innings to allow the Saltdogs to take the lead for good.

Gary SouthShore 8 Chicago 6

Sending Flowers may not be the most romantic thing the Dogs could do to win. J.C. Flowers was the opener for the second time on Tuesday. Following last week where Flowers allowed eight runs, seven earned on one hit and four walks as an opener versus Milwaukee, the results were not much better tonight. Flowers allowed six runs on four hits and five walks to put the Dogs in a hole they could not dig out of. Not as much of an indictment of Flowers as it is to the dearth of pitching that plagues most of the American Association. 

Sioux Falls 11 Sioux City 3

Five runs in the fifth and six more in the six got the job done for the Canaries. Garrett Martin gave the Canaries what they needed, an eight inning, three run effort to give the Canaries bullpen some badly needed rest. Joe Vos was 2-5 with two RBI and two runs scored at the top of the Canaries lineup. Vos has stepped up his game in his first full season with the Canaries, giving Canaries fans flash backs of what Wyatt Ulrich brought to the Canaries from 2021-2024. Thanks to Dan Vaughan for the tribute on the broadcast to Sister Rosalind Gefre. Notice the Explorers got three consecutive hits during the tribute.

Lake Country 16 Fargo-Moorhead 8

The RedHawks only have to get through the next two days and they will be done with the DockHounds for the season. The DockHounds have decimated the RedHawks in their first four meetings this season. In the last two meetings, the DockHounds have racked up 36 runs. 16 tonight and that was with holding Ryan Hernandez to a pedestrian 1-4 night. Jacob Mears joined the double digits home run club with his tenth home run.

Milwaukee 4 Kane County 1

In the old timey sorta game of the night, the red hot Milkmen leapfrogged the Cougars in the standings with their sixth consecutive victory. Davis Welch gave the Milkmen six innings of one run ball to lower his ERA to 2.10. Michael Hallquist went 2-4 with a home run and two runs batted to raise his average up to .310. Meanwhile Erik Ostberg is off playing baseball entertainment. Last year's trade is leaning towards a huge win for the Milkmen.

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) What was once a rumor passed between league colleagues, has now been reported by media. The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
