American Association Insider: Wednesday June 24 Takeaways

Three games kicked off before noon, and three under the lights in the Association.

Cleburne 8 Chicago 2

The Railroaders broke open a close game with five runs in the last three innings, taking their second in a row from the Dogs. The Roaders hit six doubles. Caleb McNeely drove in and scored a pair of runs. While the Roaders had six doubles for the day. The bullpen locked things down against the Dogs allowing just two hits in the final four innings at a rainy Impact Field.

Gary SouthShore 8 Kane County 5

It was bizarro world for the Cougars as the offense after a lengthy rain delay put up five runs, but the usually strong Cougar bullpen was victimized for eight runs in the final three innings. Wasted was a rain delay interrupted six shutout innings outing for Konnor Ash. If Colin Summerhill could face Cougars pitching all the time, he'd be an all star. His three run home run in the seventh tied the game and an infield single drove in another run. With the win the RailCats have leapfrogged the Cougars for third place in the East.

Kansas City 3 Sioux Falls 2

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Canaries starter Derek Craft was removed after a brilliant 6.2 innings. With a runner on base, the first batter reliever Spencer Bauer faced, Ryan Leitch the ninth hitter in the Monarchs lineup hit his first home run of the season that proved to be the difference. Ryan Garcia defeated the Canaries for the second time in 12 days going seven innings only allowing an RBI double and a solo home run to Josh Rehwaldt. 

Winnipeg 10 Sioux City 4

The top heavy Goldeyes lineup saw the top four hitters go 7-18 with with six RBI and six runs scored as the Goldeyes pulled away from the Explorers. The Goldeyes may have found something with Ryo Kohigashi. The Japanese lefty went six innings allowing three runs and striking out eight X's. Ray-Patrick Didder, not in the top four of the order went 3-5 with two home runs. The Explorers got a boost with the return of D'Shawn Knowles, a key part of the last two Explorers squad, Knowles has three hits in eight at bats in his first two games.

Milwaukee 6 Lake Country 3

The Milkmen continue to roll. Andy Blake hit a solo home run and Delvin Perez drove in three runs to lead the Milkmen attack. Juan Diaz picked up his third win of the season throwing seven innings just allowing a run. In losing seven in a row, the DockHounds now are only three games ahead of Gary SouthShore. All this after a near league breaking winning streak just a couple of weeks ago. Maybe we'll see a rollercoaster at Kamp Oconomowoc. 

Lincoln 7 Fargo-Moorhead 6 (10 innings)

The Saltdogs scored three runs in the eighth inning to rally from a 6-3 deficit to tie the game and send it to extra innings. The Saltdogs scored their ghost runner in the tenth inning and were able to shut the RedHawks down in the bottom of the inning to preserve the win. Jake Hjelle had a big night against his former club going 3-5 with three runs scored to pace the Saltdogs. The Saltdogs bullpen was en fuego tonight throwing five innings allowing a run on two hits to give the bats time to get back in the game.

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) What was once a rumor passed between league colleagues, has now been reported by media. The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
