American Association Insider: Tuesday September 1st Takeaways

The last week of the season has begun with a full slate of games. We had some surprises and races in some spots have tightened. There was a game from June wrapped up early in the night with Fargo-Moorhead defeating Winnipeg 17-7.Let's get down to it.

Cleburne 11 Sioux Falls 2

You thought it may be the Canaries night when Mike Hart led off the home half of the first inning with an inside the park home run. But it was all Railroaders from there as they looked more like the team playing for their playoff lives. The Roaders scored a pair in the fourth to take the lead and five in the sixth to take control, cruising to a win. With the loss the Canaries are only a tiebreaker ahead of Sioux City because........

Sioux City 6 Kansas City 5 (10 innings)

The Explorers used the long ball to build a lead as Henry George, Jackson Van De Brake and Braulio Vasquez all homered to help stake Sioux City to a lead. But the Monarchs tied the game in the last of the ninth as Austin Callahan singled in two run to knot the game at 4. In the Explorers 10th, a bases loaded double by Vasquez drove in two runs with a bases loaded ground rule double. The Monarchs got a run in their half of the 10th but could not knot the game back up.

Milwaukee 16 Lincoln 5

This one was never in doubt as the the Milkmen took a 7-1 lead in the fourth inning and cruised to victory. With the win, the Milkmen are now up two games on Kansas City for best record in the league. Lincoln now trails Sioux City and Sioux Falls by six games. Elimination could occur as quickly as tomorrow night with a loss. Andy Blake homered and drove in five runs to lead the Milkmen attack. Angelo Cabral allowed four runs in 5.1 innings but struck out 11 Saltdogs. 

Lake Country 15 Gary SouthShore 7

The old proverb was "a stitch in time saves nine". Tonight it was changed to "a nine spot in ninth saves DockHounds". Down 7-6 and going up against Jacob Coats, you think it was the RailCats night, even after a 7-1 lead became a one run game. Not so fast, the DockHounds put up a nine spot and cruised to a victory. Ray Zuberer III and Joshua Mears both drove in four runs with Mears hitting a solo home run in the eighth to extend his single season record to 35. With the win, the DockHounds stayed four games behind Milwaukee, and 1.5 games ahead of Kane County because........

Kane County 5 Chicago 2

With the game knotted at two in the sixth inning, the Cougars scored a pair, and added another run to defeat the Dogs at Impact Field. Josh Allen and Charles Mack both homered for the Cougars. Jake Gilbert picked up the win going six innings allowing two runs. Gilbert has started three games and seems to be in a groove. Jake Gozzo who has had some wobbly outings as of late, pitched a scoreless ninth to pick up the save. The carrot of second place is dangling still. You'd rather play a game three at Northwestern Medicine Field instead of having to win at Kamp Oconomowoc or Franklin Field. 

Winnipeg 8 Fargo-Moorhead 0

The Goldeyes made a bit of a stab at coming back from a 11-1 deficit before breezing to a victory in the regularly scheduled game. Aidan Newton went the seven inning distance for the Goldeyes. Max Murphy tripled and drove in three runs to lead the Goldeyes. With the win, the Goldeyes now sit three ahead of the RedHawks for that home field advantage in their likely matchup next week. The Goldeyes are also three behind Kansas City for first, so there is also a shot at first place with the final four games against the Monarchs in KC this weekend. The RedHawks sit three games ahead of Sioux Falls and Sioux City so it's not a cinch for them to make the playoffs should they stumble this week.

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) What was once a rumor passed between league colleagues, has now been reported by media. The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
