American Association Insider: Sunday September 6th Takeaways

I didn't get to watch much on the last Sunday of the season. I was at the Minnesota Amateur Baseball Tournament. I saw a 12 inning 3-2 game in a Class B semi final game where Plato defeated Delano. Former Sioux Falls Canaries reliever Trevor Jaunich was the shortstop for Delano. After that Coon Rapids walked off Sartell 6-5 in ten innings. Alex Boxwell singled, stole second and third and scored the winning run. Boxwell played one game for the St. Paul Saints in 2018, three for Gary SouthShore in 2019 before moving on to Fargo-Moorhead from 2019-2021, playing a career high 80 games and batting .296 for the Miles Wolff Cup finalists.

On Sunday night, the first round Miles Wolff Cup matchups were announced. To nobody's surprise, Kansas City opted for a first round matchup with Sioux Falls who they dominated in 2026. This leaves a juicy 2-3 matchup between Winnipeg and Fargo-Moorhead. In the East, Milwaukee chose Cleburne and having all three games at home over facing Kane County who they went 10-2 against, although the Cougars won their last two games. This leaves Lake Country vs. Kane County. With the Cougars loss on Sunday night, the DockHounds will have home campground advantage. It was a knockdown drag out affairs between the two clubs in August and the playoffs promise more the same. 




Cleburne 5 Kane County 2

In a playoff tune up for their pitching staff, seven Railroaders pitchers held Kane County to three hits. Cole Foster homered for the Roaders.

Lincoln 22 Sioux Falls 11

It was a lucky second inning for the Saltdogs as they scored 13 runs as getting outs were at a premium for both teams. 

Gary SouthShore 5 Chicago 2

An oddly low scoring game at the Pillbox by O'Hare. Korry Howell and Andy Nelson both went on Cowhide Joyrides for the Cats of the Rail.

Kansas City 7 Winnipeg 3

Three for Goldy in the first, all Monarachs after that. Luken Baker hit his 27th home run. If he had played a 100 game season, he'd be giggling at Joshua Mears like a doberman being barked at by a poodle. He would've hit 44 home runs. 

Lake Country 10 Sioux City 3

Sioux City lost its chance to finish .500. Joshua Mears lost another ball over the fence at Kamp Oconomowoc, his 38th. 

Fargo-Moorhead 5 Milwaukee 1

The RedHawks scored four in the ninth to claim this one. Marge had to only track one down today as Eric Filia homered in the fourth inning. If anyone has an in on a Track it Down, Marge shirt. Hit me up, I'll make it worth your while. 

There is only one thing to watch tomorrow. Milwaukee and Kansas City are now in a dead heat for the best overall record and home field the entire Miles Wolff Cup playoffs. If they both win tomorrow, the Milkmen get the nod due to a better in division record.

The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
