American Association Insider: Wednesday August 12th Takeaways

Before we get to the games tonight, let's talk a bit about the news today as Blaine, Minnesota, 67 miles from my front door, was announced as the newest franchise in the American Association. I'm not going to get too in depth about it here, but I will recap, review and provide insight into the newest franchise in the American Association in this week's SUNDAY Insider.



Gary SouthShore 7 Cleburne 1

I'm not going to say it was a must win situation for the RailCats tonight, but if they lost, the best they could do is gain two games on the Railroaders if they would run the table the remainder of the week. Dawson Lane rose to the occasion for the RailCats throwing eight innings, allowing one unearned run as the RailCats silenced the Roaders bats. Elvis Peralta and Nick Podkul homered for the RailCats. Podkul and Colin Summerhill both drove in two runs to lead the RailCats.

Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks 9 Sioux City 1

The Explorers went into the game with a chance to get within 3.5 games of the RedHawks for third place. It was not meant to be as Fargo-Moorhead broke the game open with five runs in the fifth inning. The Hawks iced the game in the seventh on the strength of Jose Sermo's league tying 27th home run, a three run shot. Matt Walker won for the fourth time in the last five starts, back to allowing one run in six innings, as he had in three of his last four starts. But this time he only allowed three hits, instead of four. 

Kansas City 6 Lake Country 2

The Monarchs jumped on the DockHounds for five runs in the first inning and didn't look back in a four run victory. The big blow in the five run first was a grand slam by Grant Richardson. The only runs for the DockHounds were two solo home runs by who else, Joshua Mears, his league lead tying 27th and Anthony Garcia, back to back in the seventh inning. Jimmy Endersby picked up his fifth win throwing six shutout innings. 

Lincoln 11 Kane County 4

Who now has the longest winning streak in the American Association? You guessed it, the Lincoln Saltdogs. The Saltdogs won their fourth in a row. In the sixth inning, the Saltdogs used the long ball to bump up the lead, Jairo Pomares and Jake Hjelle both hit two run home runs. Nick Shumpert homered twice, in the first and ninth innings as part of a three hit, four RBI night. Cam Dayton got the winning allowing just four hits and a run. In Dayton's last two starts he has now beaten Kane County and Kansas City allowing one run in 13 innings.

Winnipeg 11 Sioux Falls 4

There was not an inning in which a run was not scored until the ninth, and surprisingly the game wrapped up in two hours, 37 minutes. Keyshawn Lynch, Max Murphy and Ray-Patrick Didder all had solo home runs, while Adam Hall had a three run shot in the eighth inning. The big news of the night was the return of Landen Bourassa. Bourassa went five innings allowing two runs on five hits to pick up the win. It was the first win of the season for Bourassa who went 0-3 in four starts before being signed by the Mexican League. Jabari Henry, feeling the heat from Jose Sermo for his all time AAPB home run record, homered in the first inning for the Canaries. 

Milwaukee 8 Chicago 2

Delvin Perez had three hits, a home run and three RBI to lead the Milkmen offense while Jhordany Mezquita threw five shutout innings to pick up his ninth win against no losses. Wendell Marrero had three hits and an RBI for the Milkmen.

The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
