American Association Insider: Wednesday August 5th Takeaways

Six games on a Wednesday featuring two walkoff winners and a couple of nailbiters. As we head down the stretch, I think games are going to take on more a playoff like feel as teams try to jockey in position for the playoffs. The best news of the night was the return of Sioux Falls reliever Ryan Richardson who has been battling Cancer and is finally able to pitch once again.

Sioux Falls 9 Fargo-Moorhead 8

Both the Canaries and RedHawks had a pair of four run innings, but it was a single run that proved to be the difference as the Canaries win their second straight versus their Dakota rivals. Jabari Henry had a solo home run and Trevor Achenbach had a big three run home run for the Canaries. Matt Kroon and Jesus Lujano both drove in three runs for the RedHawks. The RedHawks also had good work from their bullpen as three relievers combined to throw 4.1 hitless innings to keep them in the game. 

Kansas City 7 Lincoln 4

After blowing a huge lead last night, the Monarchs made sure there would not be a similar script on Wednesday. Grant Richardson got the Monarchs off and running in the first inning with a three run home run, his 12th of the season. Two relievers combined for three shutout innings to close the doors on the Saltdogs. Cam Phelts had three of the Saltdogs seven hits for the night.

Milwaukee 4 Gary SouthShore 3 (10 innings)

A single by Yordys Valdes, his third of the night, drove in the winning run as the Milkmen knocked off the RailCats in extra innings. It looked good early as Korry Howell and Elvis Peralta had back to back home runs to begin the game for the RailCats, but they could only get one more run across the rest of the night. Dominic Cancellieri gave the RailCats a quality start allowing two earned runs, three total in six innings. Christian Young countered for the Milkmen going seven innings allowing three earned runs. 

Kane County 3 Cleburne 1

Reese Sharp scattered eight hits in 5.2 innings allowing just one run to pick up the win as the Cougars picked up their seventh win a row. The winning run was from a solo home run by Todd Lott in the fourth inning. Newcomer Cooper Weiss doubled in an insurance run in the seventh inning with an RBI double. The Cougars bullpen allowed just two hits in 3.1 innings to hold the lead. Caleb McNeely had three hits to lead the Railroaders. John Baker threw well for the Railroaders once again, going 6.2 innings allowing three runs. It was the fifth quality start in a row for Baker dating back to July 7th. 

Winnipeg 14 Chicago 5

Big Ten is normally associated with collegiate sports in the States, but tonight it was associated with the third inning in Winnipeg as the Goldeyes plated 10 runs in the third inning before Dogs pitching could record an out. The Goldeyes would cruise from there picking up their 11th win in a row. The 8-9 hitters Jiandido Tromp and Roby Enriquez combined to go 5-8 and drove in seven runs. Noah Marcelo chimed in with three runs driven in. Kevin Vaupel was the recipient of the support going six innings allowing two runs to get the win. 

Sioux City 7 Lake Country 6 (10 innings)

Austin Davis played the hero, driving in the winning run for the Explorers in the 10th as the X's bounced back after giving up a two run lead in the ninth. Down 4-1 at one time, the Explorers gained the 6-4 edge with five runs in the sixth. Braulio Vasquez hit a solo home run while Alberto Osuna had a solo of his own as part of a three RBI night. Joshua Mears hit his 25th home run, a two run shot to give the DockHounds a 2-0 lead in the first and Dom Johnson had three hits along with three RBI.

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) What was once a rumor passed between league colleagues, has now been reported by media. The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
