American Association Insider- Tuesday August 11th Takeaways

For full disclosure, I saw none of the games in the American Association tonight. So excuse me if I mess up in my boxscore regurgitation. I was watching a Class B Amateur tournament game in Elko, MN. A far southern suburb of the Twin Cities. It was Webster vs. Union Hill. Dots on the map that recruit players to come in and play Townball. I got to see Peter Tveite go all seven innings, striking out 14 batters. Tveite pitched briefly for Schaumburg before getting an elbow injury. It's rare you hear a fastball pop a glove the way his does in Townball. Plus he mixes his pitches well and doesn't walk many. If you're a manager or coach reading this, give this guy a look. 

Cleburne 9 Gary SouthShore 3

The RailCats needed to go into this series ready to make a statement. After bolstering the roster in the last week or so, the RailCats had dropped four in a row. It did not get off to a good start as the Railroaders had three run innings in the sixth and seventh to pull away for the victory. They now sit 6.5 games ahead of the RailCats for the last playoff spot. A bad week and Jeff Isom will have some decisions to make about buying or selling players to get futures for next season. Angel Mendoza had a two run home run and Cole Foster had a three run home run in the seventh to help pull away. Credit the Railroaders bullpen as they threw five shutout innings to hold the RailCats at bay.

Sioux City 7 Fargo-Moorhead 4

A three run fourth inning gave the Explorers a 5-4 lead, they added two late and held off the RedHawks to win the series opener at Newman Outdoor Field. Zac Vooltetich as he often does, led the Explorers with four runs batted in, highlighted by a bases loaded double that drove in three runs. In RedHawks news, Eric Filia made his return to Fargo after being a valuable late season acquisition in 2025.

Lake Country 8 Kansas City 5

In a battle of two prolific offenses, the DockHounds held serve at Kamp Oconomowoc. As if Kansas City didn't have enough power threats, Edwin Diaz hit his third home run in 23 at bats with the Monarchs. But the DockHounds countered his lead off home run with four runs in the bottom of the first inning including a solo Ryan Garcia home run. Dom Johnson, Joshua Mears and Mario Feliciano all had three hits with Feliciano driving in four runs. The fifth inning was the difference as the DockHounds scored  a pair of runs to break a 4-4 deadlock.

Lincoln 9 Kane County 5

The Saltdogs have gone into business as streak busters. After breaking Winnipeg's 13 game streak, they ended the Cougars 10 game streak, scoring four runs late to pull away for the win. Seven of the nine Saltdogs starters had runs batted in. Charles Mack homered and drove in three runs to lead the Cougars. 

Chicago 9 Milwaukee 7

 Break up the Dogs!!! Chance Sisco and Giovanni DiGiacomo each had three hits to lead a 15 hit Dog attack on the Milkmen. The Dogs led 8-1 in the eighth before the Milkmen scored five runs in the eighth highlighted by a Wendell Marrero grand slam to put a scare into Chicago. Steven Lacey went 5.1 innings allowing one run to pick up just his second win since May 26th. In spite of that, I see Lacey as a trade chip if they Dogs choose to deal. 

Winnipeg 10 Sioux Falls 6

Up 6-2 in the last of the seventh inning, the Canaries lead disappeared faster than a plate of Tanner Hoop's Poutine. The Goldeyes tied the game in the seventh and scored four more in the eighth including a two run Raphael Pelletier double to get the win at Blue Cross Park. Adam Hall had three of the Goldeyes eight hits. Grady Mee had a three run home run and Josh Rehwaldt had a two run home run in the sixth to provide most of the Canaries offense. Garrett allowed five runs, but only three earned in 6.1 innings to get a no decision for the Canaries.

The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
