American Association Insider: Saturday August 1st Takeaways

It was a long day of travel to get to Kane County tonight to cover the game, doing color with Tanner Hoops on the Canaries broadcast network. The weather was looking iffy, but it cleared up in time for baseball at Northwestern Medicine Field, even if it felt like mid September. Only game that could not go tonight was Lake Country at Gary SouthShore.

Winnipeg 9 Lincoln 3

A one run game opened up late as the Goldeyes scored a combined five runs in the seventh and eighth, including a three run home run by Max Murphy to pull away for their seventh consecutive victory. 

Green Bay 14 Dallas 3

After scoring 14 runs tonight, the Milkmen have now scored 30 runs in the last two games at La Moderna Field. It was 5 degrees cooler than last night at first pitch, a comfortable 95 degrees. Griffin Doersching homered twice, both solos, and went 3-5 with three RBI. Andy Blake went 4-5 with a home run and three runs batted in. Juan Diaz after pitching in a Milwaukee sauna and getting the win last Sunday, went six innings, allowing three runs to get the win. 

Kansas City 9 Chicago 6

Can it get any more frustrating for the Dogs? Leading 6-1 after three innings highlighted by a Chance Sisco grand slam and a Tyreque Reed two run home run, the Monarchs scored eight unanswered runs to pick up the win. Hudson Head (3R), J.D. Davis (solo), Saul Garza (2R) and Grant Richardson (solo) all homered off of Dogs starter Connor Lockwood. Nate Webb picked up the win throwing four shutout innings in relief. Webb combined with three other relievers to allow five hits and no runs after the third inning. 

Fargo-Moorhead 10 Sioux City 7

Down 9-1 going into the eighth, the Explorers made a game of it scoring six of the games last seven runs, but could not make it all the way back. Brian Fuentes had a grand slam in the sixth for the RedHawks and went 2-4 with five RBI. Tucupita Marcano had a triple in the first inning that cashed in two runs. Braulio Vasquez had a 5-5 game with a three run home run and four runs driven in for the night to lead the Explorers.

Kane County 3 Sioux Falls 1

Once again the Miles Wolff Cup finalists from a season ago played a nailbiter but the Cougars once again ended up on top. The Canaries scored a run in the third inning on a passed ball that scored Joe Vos. Kane County answered with three runs in the seventh that proved to be the difference. A ground rule double by Josh Allen tied the game, and Matt Bottcher followed with a two run single to give the Cougars the lead for good. Both starters were great as the Cougars' T.J. Sikkema allowed one unearned run in five innings, striking out eight. Chase Gearing threw six shutout innings allowing three hits and striking out five, but the Canaries bullpen could not hold the lead.

The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
