American Association Insider: Wednesday July 22nd Takeaways

As I alluded to on X last night. The doubleheader in Fargo went into the 11pm hour last night. Having a day job, I'm eagerly anticipating its conclusion so I can get a wrap on things and publish the blog. I'm thinking that I may start saving myself some time and doing what the newspapers used to do when they had a deadline to go to the printers. I may have to put the game on the blog and write LATE. That was the reason I didn't get into too much detail about the doubleheader.

Speaking of doubleheaders......

Kansas City 3- 2 Cleburne 1-0

The Roaders had the Monarchs right where they wanted, but it was not meant to be as the Monarchs scored three in the seventh to take the lead and Game 1. The Monarchs scored three just by using their Head, Hudson Head who drove in all three runs with a home run. It was the first hit of the game for the Monarchs. 

It was nearly a repeat in Game 2 as a Luken Baker single broke a scoreless game in the top of the seventh. Also once again, the damage came with two outs. The Monarchs used their Head again as he tripled, Luken Baker followed with a single. Grant Richardson followed with a single to score Baker. Speaking of Baker, it was John Baker who battled the Monarchs and the heat going all seven to pick up a tough luck loss.  After a Game 1 starting temperature of 102, it cooled down to 100 for the nightcap. 

Chicago 5 Kane County 1

Wiener Wednesday was winner Wednesday as the Dogs defeated the Cougars for the first time in their four game set. Connor Lockwood, the Valparaiso product made his professional debut a memorable. He went seven innings allowing just one run to pick up the win. The difference in this game with the sixth inning when the Dogs picked up four runs, highlighted by RBI doubles from Tyreque Reed and Daniel Harris. Reed led the Dogs with three hits. Is it just me or is there an advantage to a pitcher making his pro debut? Granted there are butterflies, but there is also no scouting report as far as I know, unless you can find one from his college season.

Sioux Falls 10 Winnipeg 5

With the Hoops boys, Chip and Charlie, in the house for Waggin' Wednesday, the Canaries used the good luck to pick up their fifth consecutive victory on the homestand. Rookie revelation Grady Mee had three hits to raise his average to .298. Josh Rehwaldt did Josh Rehwaldt things, homering with two men on in the first to get the Canaries off and running and driving in four runs for the night. Christian Edwards had his longest outing of the season going seven innings allowing three runs on four hits, picking up his fifth win. Keyshawn Lynch hit two solo home runs to lead the Goldeyes attack. Another positive for the Goldeyes was four shutout innings by James Bradwell who has not been able to get on track until tonight.

Fargo-Moorhead 4 Gary SouthShore 3

Whatever momentum the RailCats may have had at the All Star Break.....it's gone. The RailCats dropped their sixth consecutive game at Newman Outdoor Field. The RailCats now sit seven games out of a playoff spot. And we are seeing separation in the East. Unless the RailCats can get on the kind of roll they did after a managerial switch last season, it looks like it may be the RailCats looking from the outside on Labor Day. Deyni Olivero kept the RailCats in this game allowing three runs, two earned while scattering ten hits in seven innings. But it would be another rare run off of Jacob Coats, getting work in the eighth that was the difference, a Jesus Lujano two out double. The RailCats could only muster six hits, nobody with more than one. Eric Chalus picked up the win allowing two runs in 7.2 innings. 

Sioux City 9 Lincoln 6

A rare leak in the Saltdogs bullpen led to a four run ninth inning for the Explorers as they picked up their second consecutive win at Haymarket Park. The big blow was a three run home run by Alberto Osuna to give the Explorers the lead. Braulio Vasquez had homered earlier in the inning to tie the game at six. The Explorers allowed just one run in five innings of work from the bullpen to keep the game in reach. Wipth the win, the charter American Association franchise won their 1000th game since AAPB began play in 2006. 

Lake Country 7 Milwaukee 6

Down by a run in the eighth inning, Jake Snider singled in two runs to give the DockHounds the lead, 6-5. A Mario Feliciano insurance RBI single paid huge dividends as the Milkmen got a run back in the last of the ninth but fell short by a run. Delvin Perez and Jeremy Rivas both homered for the Milkmen. But the fourth through seventh batters went 3-18 for the night.

The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
