American Association Insider: Wednesday July 8th Takeaways

Two day games and four under the lights in American Association hump day action.

Chicago 9 Sioux Falls 3

Knotted up at three in a matinee affair in Chicago, it was the Dogs picking up a six pack of runs highlighted by a Jaxx Groshans grand slam to take down the Canaries. Aaron Altherr and Tyreque Reed also drove in two runs each. The surging Joe Vos had three hits while Josh Rehwaldt and Michael Curialle homered to lead the Canaries attack. Andres Diaz went six innings allowing three runs to pick up his first win since June 9 and his fourth of the season.

Kansas City 4 Cleburne 0

A Ryan Leitch solo shot followed four batters later by an Austin Callahan three run shot in the third inning for the Monarchs was all the offense to be had in the other matinee at Legends Field. Austin Hanson threw 5.2 shutout innings and three relievers combined to shut down the Railroaders. 

Wisconsin Dive Bars 19 Kane County 3

When I see a score like this, I think of something a gal I went to high school with once said. During a heated game of Uno, Lori was getting crushed with an avalanche of Draw Fours, finally she said, "if you can't win, you may as well just lose". And the Cougars eventually had to just focus on the rubber game of the series on Thursday. With the scored tied at one in the fourth, Dive Bar runners scored faster than losing pull tabs falling to the table. Eight runs in the fourth put this game away. The Dive Bars scored ten more runs as Kane County eventually threw position players to save the bullpen. Joshua Mears homered twice and was one of three Dive Bar batters to drive in three runs. Mears, Anthony Garcia and Brett Roberts all collected three hits. Jack-Ben Shoshan was the recipient of the run support allowing three runs in six innings to collect his third start in his third Dive Bar appearance.

Lincoln 11 Gary SouthShore 3

The Saltdogs racked up a total of 10 runs in the first five innings and coasted to victory at Haymarket Park. The top five batters in the Saltdogs lineup had two hits apiece with Cary Arbolida leading the way with a three run home run in the first as part of a four RBI night. Cael Chatham picked up the win throwing six innings allowing three runs. Chatham has wins now in both of his starts. 

Winnipeg 14 Milwaukee 7

12 Goldeyes runs between the third and sixth innings was the tale of this one from Milwaukee tonight. Ray-Patrick Didder and Ramon Bramasco, the top two batters in the Goldeyes order combined to go 6-10 with five runs batted in. Eli Saul was a savior out of the Goldeyes bullpen. Saul entered the game with a 10-7 lead in the seventh and shut down the Milkmen the rest of the way.

Sioux City 9 Fargo-Moorhead 7

When Jose Sermo snuck an opposite field grand slam to left field to give the RedHawks a 7-6, you couldn't blame the Explorers for having that "here we go again feeling". But in the ninth, the Explorers tied the game without the benefit of a hit. A Zac Vooletich two out walk, followed by a steal of second and advancement to third on a fielding error, scoring on a wild pitch to tie the game. After the middle of the order for the RedHawks could not score a run in the 10th inning, Alberto Osuna ended the five game losing streak with a lead off home run to walk it off for the X's. This is the kind of win that could propel a team to bigger things. Let's see how the X's react. The beleaguered Explorers bullpen stepped up in this one, throwing 4.2 scoreless innings allowing two hits but only walking one batter.

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) What was once a rumor passed between league colleagues, has now been reported by media. The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
