American Association Insider: Saturday July 18th Takeaways

I spent the night hanging out with friends that I haven't had the chance to see in a couple of years. So sorry this one is coming out late. I'm not sure if there will be a Sunday Insider this week. The paying job has me working all day tomorrow. So I may not have the time or motivation.

Cleburne 5 Sioux City 4 10 innings

If Michael Dixon was going to call a game as a fill in, this was definitely one to remember. Both pitchers, Josh Landry of Sioux City and Cleburne's Scott Ellis were locked in a pitcher's duel. Down 1-0 in the ninth, the Explorers knotted the game at one on a Zane Denton RBI single. When Dillon Tatum conncected for a three run home run in the 10th inning, you had to think is was the Explorers night. But the Railroaders said not so fast. Down to their last out, RBI hits by Frankie Tostado and Delino DeShields Jr. got the Roaders to within one. Cody Foster then played hero singling the tying and winning runs. 

Milwaukee 4 Gary SouthShore 3

After being swept in a doubleheader on Friday, the Milkmen bounced back to defeat the RailCats. Down 3-2 in the fifth the Milkmen scored a pair of runs and held on to pick up the victory. Christian Young picked up the win going six innings allowing three runs, all in the third inning. Charlie Marion went 0-5, a rarity in what has been a good start to his professional career. Marion was not chosen in the MLB Draft, so the Milkmen will get the benefit of being able to pencil the 22 year old in their lineup the rest of the season. 

Kane County 8 Kansas City 5

The Cougars bats have started off red hot in the second half. Tonight's achievement was putting six runs up against Monarchs ace Ryan Garcia. The Cougars countered with Konnor Ash who got to enjoy some rare run support. Ash had a total of nine runs of support in his last six starts (five in one game, that the bullpen squandered away late) before getting six to work with. Ash gave up three runs in the sixth after putting up zeros in his first five innings. Josh Allen had a two run home run in the fifth and Claudio Finol drove in three runs to pace the Cougars. Saul Garza hit his 14th home run of the year for the Monarchs. 

Lake Country 10 Winnipeg 4

The DockHounds got to the Goldeyes bullpen for five runs in the seventh inning to break a 3-3 deadlock, defeating the Goldeyes for the second consecutive night. A two run double by Anthony Garcia and a two run home run by Peter Zimmerman did the damage. Mario Feliciano drove in three runs for the DockHounds. Ray-Patrick Didder connected for his 11th home run of the season for the Goldeyes. 

Fargo-Moorhead 13 Chicago 4

An only slightly different story tonight as the RedHawks jumped out to a 12-0 lead in the fifth inning and cruised to victory. Jose Sermo homered three times to retake the American Association home run lead with 21. Three run home runs in the fourth and fifth and a solo shot for good measure in the eighth inning. Matt Walker picked up the win in what was by far his best start of the season allowing one run in six innings to pick up his first win

Sioux Falls 12 Lincoln 7 

The big inning did the trick for the Canaries tonight. Five runs in the second and four runs in the fifth. Michael Curialle and Josh Rehwaldt homered and the top three batters in the Canaries order all had two hits and drove in two runs each. The Canaries have put up runs all season but in the two games since Jabari Henry has returned to the lineup, the Canaries have been even more dangerous. Can the Canaries continue to outslug their way into a playoff spot?

The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
