American Association Insider: Wednesday July 29 Takeaways

It's as if there is a guide book for promoting baseball on weekdays. Rarely is there games on Monday, so that's a crap shoot. But then there is Two for Tuesdays, or Taco Tuesdays. Thursday seem be every team's Thirsty Thursday. And Wednesday, Hump Day, Waggin' Wednesday, or Wiener Wednesday. Even with an American Association team in St. Paul, Wiener Wednesday has become a big deal, at least a big deal according to new St. Paul Mayor Kaohly Her. Apparently Mayor Her is a big fan of Wiener Wednesday. Boy if the Saints were as edgy as they used to be, they could have some fun with this.

Sioux City 10 Gary SouthShore 4

As they used to day in the CB world (kids, ask your parents what that was). It was a big 10-4 good buddy for the Explorers in a matinee in Gary. D'Shaun Knowles and Zac Vooletich had three hit games with Knowles driving in a pair of runs for Sioux City. The big inning was the fifth as the X's racked up seven runs and never looked back. Nate Mertens threw five innings allowing one run in his second consecutive start. Mertens struck out eight Railcats in picking up the win. Olivier Basabe had three hits to pace the RailCats.  

Kane County 12 Chicago 8

The Cougars led 12-1 after the fourth inning. The Dogs made a late run but it was too little, too late. Charles Mack homered and drove in four runs. The top two batters in the order, Armond Usphaw and Josh Allen combined for five runs batted in. Konnor Ash after starving for run support, has now had a combined 28 runs of support in his last three starts, winning all three. Ash went six innings allowing two runs, none earned. The Dogs actually outhit Kane County 15-12 with Daniel Harris leading the Dogs with three hits. 

Winnipeg 2 Kansas City 1

Watch out for the Goldeyes. The Goldeyes are now over .500 as Logan Watkin's crew went to Legends Field and swept the Monarchs. The Goldeyes were down in the eighth inning before a Noah Marcelo bloop single tied the game and Raphael Pelletier followed with a run scoring double to give the Goldeyes the lead for good. Starter Kevin Vaupel who allowed one run in 5.1 innings and three relievers combined to hold the Monarchs to three hits for the night. Geison Urbaez pitched six shutout innings and was in line for the win until the Goldeyes scored in the eighth. 

Cleburne 13 Milwaukee 4

It was Richmond, Virginia night at LaModerna Field tonight as the Richmond zip code of 23221 was put up by the Railroaders in the first five innings. They would three more in the sixth en route to victory. Cody Thomas homered in the first two innings as part of a three hit, four RBI night. Mallex Smith and Brantley Bell chipped in with two run home runs. Luke Short was the benefactor of the run support allowing three runs on five hits in 6.2 innings. 

Fargo-Moorhead 7 Lincoln 6

It was a Tripp Clark double with two outs in the ninth inning that walked off the Saltdogs at Newman Outdoor Field in a wild back and forth game. Juan Fernandez led the RedHawks with three hits, with Clark going 2-5 with two runs batted in. Calyn Halvorson had a perfect night at the plate going 4-4 with an RBI to bump his average to .308. 

Lake Country 21 Sioux Falls 7

Where else but Kamp Oconomowoc would we see a true football score? The DockHounds scored a total of two touchdowns with an extra point to pull away from the Canaries. Anthony Garcia and Mario Feliciano both homered and drove in five runs eachs. Ray Zuberer III and Jake Snider each had four hits.

The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
