American Association Insider: Friday July 24th Takeaways

Five games were played on Friday night ahead of a heat wave expected to arrive for the weekend, affecting most of the series this weekend. Sioux City and Kansas City will have to play two in the heat on Saturday after rain left Lewis and Clark Park unplayable on Friday night. 

Cleburne 10 Lincoln 5

The long trip to Lincoln had no effect on the Railroaders bats as they pounded out sixteen hits, defeating the Saltdogs at Haymarket Park. The 2-5 batters in the Railroaders lineup combined to go 10-18, all four batters hitting home runs, and driving in 11 runs. Scott Ellis picked up the win going six innings, allowing three runs.  

Sioux Falls 4 Gary SouthShore 1

The Canaries got a taste of the Thomas Dorminy of 2025 as the veteran lefty went eight innings, allowing one run as the Birds won their sixth game in their last seven on the home stand. Josh Rehwaldt drove in a run and Anthony Hall drove in two as part of a 3-4 night at the plate. The RailCats have now dropped their seventh in a row and are sitting 7.5 games back of a playoff spot.

Fargo-Moorhead 5 Winnipeg 4

The RedHawks scored three runs in the first inning and made it stick, edging Winnipeg at Blue Cross Park. Tripp Clark who had been out of the RedHawks lineup since June 22 before playing against Gary SouthShore on Wednesday, doubled in a run going 2-3 for the night. Matt Walker threw six innings of one run ball to pick up the win for the RedHawks. 

Packers 14 Bears 7

It was yet again another slugfest at Kamp Oconomowoc. The Dogs were up 5-0 in the second inning but were outscored 14-2 the rest of the way. The DockHounds scored nine runs combined in the sixth and seventh innings. Anthony Garcia now has 22 RBI in 19 games with the Hounds after a two home runs and four RBI night, going 3-5. Ray Zuberer III also drove in five runs with a home run and four hits. Joshua Mears hit his 21st home run to pull within three of Jose Sermo for the league lead. Aaron Altherr homered twice for the Dogs. 

Milwaukee 12 Kane County 8

A six run sixth inning was the difference as the Milkmen pulled away from the Cougars at Franklin Field. The Cougars led 4-0 early before a grand slam from Alec Olund in the fourth inning tied the game. The Cougars then led 6-5 before the roof caved in during the sixth inning. Jake Gilbert, a reliable reliever all season had a rough night as he walked three batters and allowed four earned runs without giving up a hit and not retiring a batter. News had come out earlier in the day that Claudio Finol would indeed be out for the season after suffering a major knee injury. Best wishes to one of the stalwarts of the Cougars and the American Association.

The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
