American Association Insider: Friday July 3rd Takeaways

A full slate of games and one game picked up from being suspended last night on the American Association docket.

Gary SouthShore 11 Lincoln 0

It was all RailCats as the bats exploded for 11 runs and Matt Reitz bounced back from a rough start to throw seven shutout innings to pick up the win. Colin Summerhill went 2-5 with a solo home run and Nick Podkul was 2-2 with two home runs to lead the RailCats. A total of four home runs for the night for the RailCats as they brought their own form of fireworks. 

Milwaukee 5 Kane County 3 

Mother nature was not having it tonight when it came to a potential Cougars comeback as the rains were too much to continue the game in the bottom of the seventh. Yordys Valdez and Charlie Marion each collected three hits at the top of the order for the Milkmen. Kane County had seven hits for the night but in statistical oddity, nobody had more than one hit. The Cougars will need to win the next two in order to inch within a game of the Milkmen.

Sioux Falls 10 Sioux City 7 (Resumption of 7/2 game)

It was a tale of two days in two cities. In a game that started in Sioux Falls on Thursday night, the Canaries jumped out to a 10-0 lead before rain put an end to the festivities. Concluded in Sioux City on Friday, the Canaries were held in check while the Explorers threatened to make it all the way back. In a shuffling of the batting order for the Canaries, Mike Hart and Josh Rehwaldt were elevated to 1-2 in the batting order for the Canaries. The pair of veteran Canaries combined for five runs batted in.

Sioux Falls 6 Sioux City 4

In a seven inning tilt, the theme was similar to last night. The Canaries jumped out to a big lead, 6-0 after two innings before the Explorers made it a game late but came up short. Mike Hart homered to lead off the game and Joe Vos delivered the big blow of the game, a three run home run in the first inning. Thomas Dorminy in his first start in exactly a month, threw five shutout innings to pick up the win. A nice crowd of 3,337 was on hand to see it. 

Fargo-Moorhead 8 Kansas City 6

Down 6-4 in the seventh inning, 2 run doubles for Colby Wilkerson and Jairus Richards proved to be the difference as the RedHawks defeated the Monarchs at Newman Outdoor Field Richards and Wilkerson combined for seven RBI on the night. J.D. Davis homered for the Monarchs in a four run fifth inning. Great turnout tonight in Fargo as 4,704 fans took in the game.

Winnipeg 8 Chicago 2

If it was corner lot ball growing up, I would've been complaining because we didn't get our "fair ups". That was the case tonight as the rain prevented the Dogs from hitting in the last of the ninth. Ray-Patrick Didder has been a home run tear as of late hitting his seventh of the season, a three run shot in their eighth as the Goldeyes pulled away from the Dogs. Luke Boyd and four Goldeyes relievers combined to only allow six hits.

Cleburne 12 Lake Country 5

Frankie Tostado homered twice and drove in four runs while Caleb McNeely drove in four runs, three of them on a three run home run in the seventh inning to lead a 12 run Railroaders ambush of the DockHounds. Joshua Mears hit his 14th home run for the DockHounds to force a three way tie on the Home Run leaderboard. Newcomer Anthony Garcia homered twice for the DockHounds. Could he be the bat the fills the Ryan Hernandez void?

The story being the potential move of the Kane County Cougars and Cleburne Railroaders to the Frontier League, soon to be renamed National Association of Professional Baseball. The move would be made for the 2027 season. A real blow to an American Association that has ambitions of expansion.  To get a real feel for what this would mean to AAPB, let's go all the way back to 2006. In the Fall of 2005, the St. Paul Saints, Sioux Falls Canaries, Sioux City Explorers and Lincoln Saltdogs all departed the Northern League. Philosophical differences between ownerships being cited as a major reason for the defection. But a four team league was not going to cut it. American Association SUNDAY Insider: The underpaid, overworked liaisons of the American Association

Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA)  The idea of this Insider came to my head on Thursday night as I was watching a game in Cleburne. It was the 750th American Association broadcast for voice of the Railroaders, Brad Allred. The Railroaders produced a video for Allred with numerous colleagues from the past, former players and current players paying tribute to Allred.  It got me to thinking just how important the play by play men are to the teams which they are employed. Teams in the AAPB do not have local newspapers following the teams on the road. Often times it is the play by play guys that may put a game story on their team website that the local newspaper picks up to condense into a tiny part of the newspaper. Not to discount the media relations director who also do gamers with no byline given if the newspaper picks it up.  For myself this goes all the way back to the Northern League. American Association SUNDAY Insider: American Associaiton returning to Minnesota

 Kevin Luckow (non member of IBWAA) It's been funny. I've seen stories, thoughts and opinions all around about the announcement of an American Association team in Blaine. They are nice recaps, crosses the t's and dots the i's. But all from an outsider perspective. There's a phrase I like to use when people refer to me as knowledgeable about the going ons in Independent Baseball. It's not that I'm smart, it just means I've been around a long time. For this story I think we have to go back to September of 2020. The St. Paul Saints were playing their final game of the Covid season against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks. It was in front of a relatively sparse crowd. A weeknight in mid to late September and there was nothing at stake outside of who was going to win the American Association batting title.
