American Association Insider: Wednesday June 3rd Takeaways
Plenty of day games dotted a six game slate in the American Association on Wednesday afternoon. For those new to the league, you may wonder why they play a day game in the middle of the series opposed to having a "getaway day" game on Thursday. I have heard the players like it as it gives them an extra night off during the week. Even if it means getting up early to play a day game.
Kansas City 3 Fargo-Moorhead 2
After a 1-0 game to begin the series on Tuesday night, we thought the bats came alive after both teams scored a pair of runs in the first inning. From there once again pitching took over as there would be no scoring until the eighth inning. An RBI single by Brady Lindsly drove in what proved to be the winning run. Call me old fashioned but I love seeing pitching reining supreme. The offenses in this league have had their way for so many years as any effective pitcher would get snatched up by Mexico or MiLB.
Lake Country 10 Lincoln 9
The same could not be said in Lincoln as the DockHounds and Saltdogs had a slug fest. After the DockHounds had seemingly the game under control, leading 7-0 heading into the last of the seventh, Lincoln broke through with five runs, After three more runs for the Hounds in the eighth, four Saltdogs runs in the eighth made it a one run game but the first place Hounds held on for the win. The Hounds keep finding ways to win on the road, winning nine in a row overall after beginning the season 4-5. If they can take advantage and hold serve at home, they will be tough to catch in the East.
Sioux Falls 10 Winnipeg 4
Sometimes heroes can be found in the form of a long reliever. The Canaries found one today in Dylan Kirkeby. Kirkeby was thrust into action earning the win going 6.1 innings allowing just two runs in spite of walking six batters. Jabari Henry is on the Injured list, so it'll be a group effort to pick up his slack. Today it was Anthony Hall going 3-5 with a home run. Trevor Achenbach homered for the second game in a row.
Milwaukee 4 Chicago 2
The Milkmen utliized the long ball scoring all four of their runs on home runs to turn the tables on the Dogs at Franklin Field on Wednesday. Davis Welch was superb going seven innings allowing just one run to pick up the win for the Milkmen. The Dogs and Milkmen are in that sticky middle of the East Division. With Gary SouthShore finding their mojo, there could be a decent team not making the playoffs.
Gary SouthShore 4 Sioux City 3
A Jake Guenther RBI single in the sixth inning was the difference as the RailCats guaranteed a series win, defeating the Explorers in Sioux City. The home woes for the X's continue. The Explorers had runners at second and third with two outs in the ninth inning with Alberto Osuna at the plate. Osuna took one of the worst strike three calls I've seen in my years, and I watch a lot of Townball. I felt bad for the plate umpire, Alex Endell as I did for the Explorers, as I'm sure in hindsight he would've liked to have that call back. But when you're struggling like the X's are at home, you have to go out and make your own luck.
Kane County 6 Cleburne 0
Reese Sharp once again lived up to his name, throwing seven shutout innings, allowing only two hits to Cleburne in picking up the win. Sharp now has a 0.95 ERA in 19 innings pitched. Another outing like that and he could be the next Cougar signed away to an MLB organization. Alex McGarry had a three run home run in a three run first inning for the Cougars that gave Sharp more than enough run support. McGarry after a tough regular season in 2025 is now hitting .361 after a two hit, three RBI effort.
