American Association Insider: Friday May 22 takeaways

I have to be honest, even with five games tonight, between trying to fight off what ever this infection I have and playoff hockey going on, I had a hard time getting into tonight's action. But let's take a look around the league.

Sioux Falls 9 Chicago 5

Tough times continued on the road for the Dogs where they dropped their third game in four road outings. In an off season where much of the Canaries rotation have moved on, a big return was left hander Thomas Dorminy. Dorminy scattered 11 hits in six innings allowing three runs to pick up his second win in his second start of the season. For some reason, IScore wants to give the win to Will Levine who got a hold with a scoreless seventh inning. The rotation has thrown well for the most part for the Canaries, but there is a peace of mind in being able to throw an established winner in this league every four days. Unfortunately the Sioux Falls Stampede hockey team could not find the win column tonight, falling in two overtimes to Muskegon. The Stampede lead the series 2-1 needing just one more win to bring a championship to Sioux Falls.

Winnipeg 9 Milwaukee 2

The Goldeyes bounced back from a series loss to Kane County by defeating the Milkmen. Mitchell Lambson, a guy that I appreciate as he's been around since the glory days of the American Association, the late 2010's. Lambson pitched six innings allowing two runs to get the win. After a tough first outing, it was good to see the crafty lefty bounce back. Solomon Bates started for the Milkmen but left the game after getting four outs. I'm hoping that there wasn't a major involved as Bates was a great story back when he pitched for the Sioux City Explorers.

Gary SouthShore 5 Cleburne 0

The long suffering RailCats had to like what they saw from two returning players. Elvis Peralta hit a grand slam in the third inning to put the RailCats in the lead for good. It was all that Peyton Long needed throwing seven shutout innings to pick up his first win of the season. Long was one of the pitchers that stepped up for the RailCats in their late season surge last season. It will be interesting what Long will be able to do to follow up his 2025 season.

Kansas City 6 Lake Country 1

Ryan Garcia and four relievers held a good hitting Lake Country team to three hits as the Monarchs defeated the DockHounds on Friday night. On a 72 degree night in KCK, the Monarchs drew 1476 to Legends Field. I think the Monarchs are in an uphill battle to get fans out to Legends Field. It's sad to see as it's a nice cozy ballpark to catch a game in, maybe it's the short fences that make it feel smaller, and the Monarchs are perennially contenders.

Lincoln 14 Sioux City 7

Maybe I'm on to something with the Saltdogs needing to get on the road and bond a bit. After falling into a 5-2 hole after one inning, the Saltdogs bounced back with five runs to retake the lead that they would never relinquish. J.D. McCracken has had a rude introduction to American Association Baseball as he has now allowed 11 runs in 5.2 innings. Sorry, but I see the name McCracken and all I can think of Big Ernie McCracken, Bill Murray's obnoxious role in the cult hit Kingpin, and Tim Dr. Hook McCracken from Slapshot.
