American Association Insider: Miles Wolff Cup Game Two
Sioux Falls had won Game Two in their first two playoff series and had 11 game winner Thomas Dorminy pitching. In the words of philosopher Alfred E. Neuman, what me worry? And the Canaries did not have to worry as they evened the series with a 5-4 win on Tuesday night. The series shifts to the Birdcage for the rest of the series where the Canaries have to feel confident, even with Konnor Ash pitching Game Three on Thursday night. The Canaries handed Ash a loss in his only outing in Sioux Falls in June. Although not made official as of press time, I would expect Sioux Falls to counter with Tanner Brown.
With the game tied at one in the fifth inning, Jordan Barth came up big with a three run home run just over the left field wall to give the Birds a 4-1 lead as Cougars starting pitcher Chris Mazza made his only mistake of the night.
The Cougars got a pair back in the seventh on a Blake Rutherford single and an RBI groundout by pinch hitter Zane Spinn. And it was once again a one run game.
But the Canaries got an RBI single by Josh Rehwaldt in the top of the ninth that loomed large as the Cougars got a run back in the last of the ninth on a Zane Spinn single. But closer Charlie Hasty retired Trendon Craig to end the ball game.
Thomas Dorminy got the win in his best start of the post season allowing three runs in. It will be interesting to see if Dorminy will be utilized in any fashion the rest of the series. A Game Five would be on three day's rest.
The teams will head the Birdcage to resume the series on Thursday night with 6:35 starts on Thursday and Friday night with a decisive Game Five scheduled for Saturday night at 5:05, all games at the Birdcage.
