Six games in the circuit on Hump Day featuring two more extra inning games.
Chicago 12 Lake Country 5
Last night I wrote that the Dogs were going to have to sweep the series this week to send the message that they could overtake the DockHounds. They followed the script sans the late inning dramatics of the evening before in a win at Impact Field. Down 1-0 after two innings, the Dogs outscored the DockHounds 9-3 over the next three innings and rode it to a victory. The Dogs homered four times with Henry Kusiak connecting for a three run shot. Jacob Teter, Chance Sisco and Tripp Clark also homered for the Dogs. Clark on his third team of the season is now hitting .313 in 150 at bats. A stunning stat for a guy on his third club. Clark drove in three runs while Kusiak drove in four runs, Sisco had four hits on the night. Brian Rey and Luke Roskam homered for the DockHounds.
Kane County 4 Milwaukee 3 (10 innings)
It looked good for the Milkmen to creep within yet another game of the Cougars for eight innings, but the Cougars said, not so fast. Armand Upshaw doubled and scored to tie the game in the ninth and the Cougars cashed in the automatic runner in, breathing a sigh of relief as they are back to 5.5 ahead of the Milkmen with 11 games left. Both starters threw well with the Cougars' Vin Timpanelli allowing three runs, one earned in seven innings. His counterpart Jhordany Mezquita threw seven innings allowing one run. Blake Rutherford had two hits in his Kane County debut.
Gary SouthShore 11 Fargo-Moorhead 3
A night after getting thumped by the red hot RedHawks the RailCats pride kicked in as they returned the favor at Newman Outdoor Field. Leading 3-2 after two innings, the RailCats scored the next seven runs. Elvis Peralta and L.C. Castillo had three runs batted in apiece to lead the RailCats. Cooper Edwards chipped with three hits and Carlos Machado homered for the RailCats. Spencer Adams won his sixth game pitching seven innings, allowing two runs.
Kansas City 4 Winnipeg 3 (13 innings)
John Nogowski finally ended a stalemate with a sacrifice fly in the 13th inning to score the automatic runner as the Monarchs gain a game on division leader Sioux City with a walk off winner at Legends Field, pulling to within 3.5 games. Roby Enriquez had three hits for the Goldeyes.
Sioux Falls 9 Cleburne 7
Usually the team that clinches a playoff spot tends to throw up a clunker the next night, but that was not the case as the Canaries led 9-1 after six innings before the Railroaders gave the Canaries a scare with six runs late to make it a close game. Matt Bottcher collected three more hits to bump his average up to .361. The Canaries took advantage of seven Railroaders walks to help build the lead. Kyle Martin singlehandedly tried to keep the Railroaders in the game with three home runs and six runs batted in for the night. Ryan Zimmerman got the win allowing three runs in seven innings. A great departure from his last outing against the Railroaders in May when he allowed 10 runs in five innings.
Lincoln 5 Sioux City 2
The Saltdogs took adavantage of a four error night by the Explorers to take home a win at Lewis and Clark Park. In a statistical oddity, the Saltdogs only recorded one run batted in but all five runs allowed by the Explorers were earned. Henry George had the only home run of the night, a solo shot for the Explorers. Dylan Castaneda picked up his third win allowing the one run in 6.2 innings. Jared Wetherbee got the loss for the Explorers in spite of striking out 10 batters in a six inning, two run effort.
